2025 High-Level Symposium on Maritime Silk Road International Economics and Trade Arbitration Successfully Held in Xiamen

Time:2025/09/15 BJT

Xiamen, September 8, 2025 - The “2025 High-Level Symposium on Maritime Silk Road International Economics and Trade Arbitration”, hosted by the China Maritime Arbitration Commission and supported by the International Commercial Dispute Prevention and Settlement Organization (ICDPASO), was successfully held in Xiamen. With the theme of “Strengthening Legal Services Cooperation Among BRICS Countries and Promoting Common Healthy Development of WorldEconomy”, the symposium attracted representatives of arbitration institutions, arbitrators and lawyers around the world. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the challenges and opportunities of the arbitration system and advocated to further cooperation in legal services among BRICS countries.

The Secretariat of ICDPASO, together with the China Maritime Arbitration Commission, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Mediation Center, and the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution, jointly released the Joint Initiatives on Strengthening Legal Services Cooperation Among BRICS Countries and Promoting Common Healthy Development of World Economy.

During the keynote discussion session, Mr. Jason CHIA, Secretary-General of ICDPASO, shared several classic cases involving enterprises from BRICS countries and put forward two core recommendations. First, he pointed out that greater emphasis should be placed on dispute prevention. He suggested that enterprises should incorporate dispute prevention clauses into contracts prior to signing and utilize methods including negotiation, facilitation and good offices to prevent minor frictions from escalating into major disputes. Second, he advised the enterprises to focus on alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and select the most appropriate dispute resolution method based on the enterprise’s actual needs.

Next, ICDPASO will continue to uphold an open and cooperative attitude, promote economic and trade cooperation among BRICS countries, and integrate into the construction of the BRICS legal services system. By collaborating with more institutions to formulate rules that meet international needs, ICDPASO will help establish a more friendly and efficient dispute settlement mechanism among BRICS countries and contribute to the healthy development of the global economy.
